돌봄, 모든 치료의 근원

 

돌봄은 치료와는 다른 그 무엇이다. 치료는 ‘변화’를 의미한다. 의사, 법관, 교역자, 사회사업가 그들은 모두 우리를 그들의 전문적인 기술로 사람들의 삶 안에 변화를 가져오려 한다. 그들은 그들이 가져오려는 치료의 종류를 위해 값을 지불한다. 그러나 치료는 이것이 되어지는 것처럼 당연하게, 쉽게 폭력적이거나 교묘한 속임수거나 심지어 돌봄의 밖의 넘어서 파괴적이 된다. 돌봄은 함께 있어주고, 함께 고함지르며, 함께 아파하고, 함께 느끼고, 돌봄은 긍휼이다. 다른 사람이 나의 형제며 자매며 인류이며 운명이며 상처 입기 쉬운 나와 같은 사람이라는 진리를 확증하는 것이다.

돌봄이 우리의 첫 번째 관심이 될 때, 치료는 선물로써 받아들여지게 된다. 자주 우리는 치료하여 들지 않으나 우리는 항상 돌보아 줄 수 있다. 돌보아주는 것은 바로 인간이 되는 것이다.

Care, the Source of All Cure

 

 

Care is something other than cure, Cure means "change." A doctor, a lawyer, a minister, a social worker - they all want to us their professional skills to bring about changes in people's lives. They get paid for whatever kind of cure they can bring about. But cure, desirable as it may be, can easily become violent, manipulative, and even destructive if it does not grow out of care. Care is being with, crying out with, suffering with, feeling with, Care is compassion. It is claiming the truth that the other person is my brother or sister, human, mortal, vulnerable, like I am.

When care is our first concern, cure can be received as a gift. Often we are not able to cure, but we are always able to care, To care is to be human.
