상상력의 언어

 

 

시인은 뭔가 묘사되지 않는 것, 뭔가 설명이 안 되는 단어를 사용하지만 뭔가를 만들어 낸다. 시인은 “제작자”를 의미한다. 시집은 목적을 설명하는 언어가 아니라 상상력의 언어이다. 이것은 이것 안에 우리의 관여를 초대하는 그런 방식으로 실재의 이미지를 만들어 낸다. 우리는 우리가 시를 읽은 이후에 많은 정보를 갖지 않으나, 더 많은 경험을 갖게 된다. 이것은 “생겨난 것에 대한 시험이 아니라 발생한 사건 안으로 잠입하는 것이다.” 만일 계시록이 시인인 신학자에 의해 쓰여 졌다면, 우리는 마치 이것이 뭔가가 생겨나리라고 한 것을 발견하기 위한 달력처럼, 혹은 뭔가 발생한 것에 대한 연대기처럼 읽혀져서는 안 된다.

이것이 시인이 성경의 마지막 말들을 특별히 사용한 것이다. 우리가 이 마지막 책을 취할 때에, 우리는 이미 우리 앞의 하나님의 완전한 계시를 갖게 된 것이다. 우리의 구원과 관련되어 행하는 모든 것이고 어떻게 믿음의 삶을 살아야 할지 수반되는 교육을 포함하는 것이다. 우리가 불충분한 정보에 근거하게 될 위험은 없다. 그러나 결점이 없는 것에 위험이 있고, 우리는 우리를 둘러싼 훌륭한 것들에 주의하지 않을 수 있다. 모세, 이사야, 에스겔, 스가랴, 마가, 그리고 바울, 성 요한이 친밀한 언어로 사용한 것. 예기되지 않은 리듬 안에 그들을 준비함에 의해서, 우리를 깨워서 우리는 “그리스도 예수의 계시”를 보는 것에 들어가게되는 데 마치 처음으로 그런 것처럼 말이다.

 

우리의 삶들로 부터 우리의 죄를 피를 씻으신 우리를 사랑하신 그리스도께 영광과 힘이 있기를... 우리를 왕국으로, 그의 아버지를 위한 제사장으로 만드신 이에게 영원히. 그의 길이 세세토록.

The Language of Imagination

 

 

 

 

A poet uses words not to explain something, and not to describe something, but to make something. Poet means "maker." Poetry is not the language of objective explanation but the language of imagination. It makes an image of reality in such a way as to invite our participation in it. We do not have more information after we read a poem, we have more experience. It is not "an examination of what happens but an immersion in what happens." (Denise Levertov, the poet in the World). If the Revelation is written by a theologian who is also a poet, we must not read it as if it were an almanac in order to find out when things are going to occur, or a chronicle of what has occurred.

It is particularly appropriate that a poet has the last word in the Bible. By the time we get to this last book, we already have a complete revelation of God before us. Everything that has to do with our salvation, with accompanying instructions on how to live a life of faith, is here in full. There is no danger that we are inadequately informed. But there is danger that through familiarity and we will not pay attention to the splendors that surround us in Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Zechariah, Mark, and Paul, St. John takes the familiar words and, by arranging them in unexpected rhythms, wakes us up so that we see "the revelation of Jesus Christ" entire, as if for the first time.

 

 

Glory and strength to Christ, who loves us,

who blood-washed our sins from our lives,

Who made us a Kingdom, Priests for his Fathers,

Forever - and yes, he's on his way!
