성 요한

 

 

성 요한은 매력적인 타입의 특별한 신학자이다. 모든 그의 하나님에 대한 생각은 불 아래의 장소로 가져간다. “나는 밧모라 불리는 작은 섬에 있었다.” 죄수들의 섬. 그는 그의 발 앞에서 생각하고, 달리고 혹은 그의 무릎 앞에서 기도하고 우리의 최고의 신학자의 특출한 자세의 남자였다. 그 신학자가 습관적으로 상아 탑을 지원하고 꿰뚫을 수 없고 대단히 무게 있는 책을 쓰기위해 그 자신을 헌신하고자 했을 때, 역사 안에서 그 시간들이 있어왔다. 그런, 가장 중요한 신학자들은 세상의 한 가운데서 하나님에 대한 저작과 그들의 생각을 가져왔는데, 그 행동의 빽빽함 안에서 그러했다. : 바울은 그의 감옥 독방살이 에서 편지들을 집요하게 받아쓰기 했다. : 아다나시우스 contra mundum, 세명의 다른 황제들에 의해서 다섯 번 추방시켜 내동댕이쳤다 : 어거스틴, 로마의 질서가 혼란으로 붕괴되는 것을 경험한사람들을 위한 목회자였다. 도마, 문제 삼아지지 않았던 이교도들이 그러했고 전쟁의 어려움 속에서 그의 마음을 사용한 사람. 유럽을 영적이고도 정신적인 정글로 바꾸어놓았다. 칼빈, 제네바의 혁명적 어중이떠중이를 하나님의 사람들의 진보된 공동체로 바꾸는데 지치지 않았던 사람. 바르트는 노동쟁의를 중재하고 죄수들에게 설교했다. 본훼퍼는 나찌독일에서 도망쳐온 실존들을 이끌었다. 그리고 성 요한은 그리스도안의 그의 친구들이 이교도의 침략의 무서운 힘에 의해 포위 되었을때 밧모 섬의 감옥의 딱딱한 바위로 추방당했다.

그리스도인 공동체는 하나님을 생각하여 우리를 지키고 단지 아무것이나 추측하지 않도록 신학자들을 필요로 한다. 우리의 삶의 가장 깊은 수준에서 우리는 우리의 전 마음과 심장과 힘으로 예배할 하나님을 요구한다. 영원한 것을 위한 맛은 세속화된 유전에 의해 우리를 자라나게 할 수 없다. 우리는 하나님으로부터 유래된 존재이고 하나님을 위해 향해 있다. 성 요한은 그들의 훈련됨에 의해 확증된 신학자들의 거대한 사회에 최고봉에 서 있고 함께 속해진 신과 학에 (theos and logos) 대해 활기 있는 생각을 준다. 우리는 창조 안에서 살아가고 정신병원에서 살지 않는 것이다.

 

나, 요한은, 환란 중에 항상 너희와 함께 있고 예수 안에서 인내의 열정과 왕국에 있다. 밧모라 불리 우는 섬에서 왜냐하면 예수의 증인이요 하나님의 말씀 때문에 그러했다. 주일날 이었고, 나는 성령 안에서 기도했다.

St. John

 

St. John is a theologian of particularly attractive type: all his thinking about God took place under fire: "I was on the isle, called Patmos," a prison isle. He was a man thinking on his feet, running, or on his knees, praying, the postures characteristic of our best theologians. There have been times in history when the theologians were supposed to in habit ivory towers and devote themselves to writing impenetrable and ponderous books. But the important theologians have done their thinking and writing about God in the middle of the world, in the thick of the action: Paul urgently dictating letters from his prison cell: Athanasius contra mundum, five times grounded into exile by three different emperors: Augustine, pastor to people experiencing the chaotic breakup of Roman order and civitas: Thomas, using his mind to battle errors and heresies that, unchallenged, would have turned Europe into a spiritual and mental jungle; Calvin, tireless in developing a community of God's people out of Geneva's revolutionary rabble; Barth arbitrating labor disputes and preaching to prisoners; Bonnhoeffer leading a fugitive existence in Nazi Germany; and St. John, exiled on the hard rock of Patmos prison while his friends in Christ were besieged by the terrible engines of a pagan assault....

 

The Christian community needs theologians to keep us thinking about God and not just making random guesses. At the deepest levels of our lives we require a God whom we can worship with our whole mind and heart and strength. The taste for eternity can never be bred out of us by a secularizing genetics. Our existence is derived from God and destined for God. St. John stands in the front ranks of the great company of theologians who convince by their disciplined and vigorous thinking that theos and logos belong together, that we live in a creation and not a madhouse.

 

I, John, with you all the way in the trial and the Kingdom and passion of patience in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of God's Word, the witness of Jesus. It was Sunday and I was in the Spirit, praying
