Toward a Nonjudgmental Life

 

One of the hardest spiritual tasks is to live without prejudices. Sometimes we aren't even aware how deeply rooted our prejudices are. We may think that we relate to people who are different from us in color, religion, sexual orientation, or lifestyle as equals, but in concrete circumstances our spontaneous thoughts, uncensored words, and knee-jerk reactions often reveal that our prejudices are still there.

Strangers, people different from us, stir up fear, discomfort, suspicion, and hostility. They make us lose our sense of security just by being "other." only when we fully claim that God loves us in an unconditional way and look at "those other persons" as equally loved can we begin to discover that the great variety in humanity is an ｅxpression of the immense richness of God's heart. Then the need to prejudge people can gradually disappears.

 

# circumstances - 주위사정, 어떤 상황에 두다.

# spontaneous - 자발적인, 충동적인, 자연스럽게 일어나는

# uncensored - 검열 받지 않은 # reactions- 반작용 # stir - 휘젓다 # hostility - 적대

# disappears - 차차 사라지다.

 

판단하지 않는 삶을 향해

 

영적 과업의 가장 힘든 것 중 하나는 편견 없이 사는 것이다. 때때로 우리는 우리의 편견이 얼마나 깊이 뿌리 깊게 박혀있는지 존재 알지 못한다. 우리는 우리가 관련하는 사람들이 우리와는 피부색이나 종교 성적성향 혹은 동일한 삶의 스타일에서 다른 것을 생각하지만, 환경을 조성함에 있어 우리의 충동적인 생각들, 정제되지 못한 말들, 그리고 무릎이 당겨지는 반작용이 자주 우리의 편견이 여전히 거기 있음을 드러낸다.

낯선이, 우리와 다른 사람들, 두려움과 불안과 회의와 적대를 휘저어 놓는다. 그들은 우리로 우리의 안정의 감각을 만드는데 단지 ‘다름’에 의해서이다. 우리가 충분히 요구할 때 무조건적인 방식으로 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신다는 것과 “그러한 다른 사람들”을 볼 때도 동일하게 우리는 거대한 인간의 다양성이 하나님의 심장의 측량할 수 없는 부요로 표현되고 있음을 발견한다. 그러고 사람을 미리 판단할 필요들은 점점 사라지게 된다.
