Listening as Spiritual Hospitality

 

To listen is very hard, because it asks of us so much interior stability that we no longer need to prove ourselves by speeches, arguments, statements, or declarations. True listeners no longer have an inner need to make their presence known. They are free to receive, to welcome, to accept.

Listening is much more than allowing another to talk while waiting for a chance to respond. Listening is paying full attention to others and welcoming them into our very beings. The beauty of listening is that those who are listened to start feeling accepted, start taking their words is a form of spiritual hospitality by which you invite strangers to become friends, to get to know their inner selves more fully, and even to dare to be silent with you

영적 환대로서 듣기

 

듣는다는 것은 매우 어렵다. 왜냐하면 이것은 더 이상 말이나, 논쟁이나, 진술이나 혹은 천명에 의해 우리 자신이 증명할 필요가 없도록 내적인 안정을 많이 요구하기 때문이다. 진실한 경청자는 더 이상 내면이 그들의 현존을 알도록 만들 필요를 가지지 않은 사람이다. 그들은 받아들이고, 영접하고, 수용하는 것에 자유롭다.

경청은 반응하기 위한 기회를 기다리는 동안 다른 말을 허용하는 것 보다 더 많은 것이다. 경청은 다른 이에게 충만한 집중을 지불하는 것이고 그들을 우리가 대단한 존재 안으로 환영하는 것이다. 경청의 미는 느낌을 수용하기 시작하기 위해 듣는 사람이고, 그들의 말을 시작하는 것은 낯선 이를 친구가 되도록 초대하는 영적 환대의 모습이며, 더 가득한 그들의 내면 안을 알게 하는 것이고, 심지어 당신과 함께 침묵하도록 도전하는 것이다.
